SESSION 3
Around the World with Skype
Dec. 16, 2009, Week in the Classroom
http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=481

Around the World

4. Summary: Around the World with Skype is an excellent session showcasing how a classroom can weave in global and cultural awareness for all students. The session explains why teachers should Skype, how to set up a Skype, offers online resources to get you started Skyping, tips and tricks on preparing students for Skype connections, advice to teachers, ways to document your Skype connections, and why students should reflect after a Skype.
5. Ideas for Further Exploration: I plan to explore several of the websites mentioned to find other 4th grade teachers that Skype.
6. Personal/Professional Development:
I love to travel and wish I could have Skyped to my class last year while I was in Greece. I didn’t know a lot about Skype, but have always wanted to learn more. This session has definitely helped me. I plan to explore several of the websites mentioned to find other 4th grade teachers that Skype.
7. Three Ideas:
#1: I would love for my students to Skype with other students across the United States as we explore and learn about the various regions of the United States in Social Studies. #2: During our rock unit, I would like for the students to Skype and interview a professional geologist. #3: I believe that the students would enjoy interviewing and Skyping with an author whose books we are reding in the classroom.

SESSION 4

Options for Building Your Teacher Website
Dec. 9, 2009, Getting Started
http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=479

I created a classroom website using http://www.weebly.com. Right now, it's a work in progress. You can visit my website at www.tdkgrant.weebly.com

4. Summary:
The Options for Building Your Teacher Website session has a wealth of knowledge and tips explaining why teachers should have a website, the benefits of using a website, and how to set up a website for free. The presenter also gives her site that you can go to and sign up for her weekly newsletter – http://cyndidannerkuhn.info.

5. Ideas for Further Exploration:
As a teacher, I’m always looking for free or inexpensive affordable things to use in my classroom. Setting up and using a free website is top on my to-do list. My school has a website, but each individual teacher does not. The teachers use Ed-line as a form of communication to parents, but I really like the idea of using a website to communicate with my students and parents.

6. Personal/Professional Development:
I have wanted to build a classroom website for a while now, but was hesitant because it seemed a bit overwhelming. I didn’t know which program to use or where to begin. I consider myself computer savvy in some areas, but constructing a website seemed a bit out of my technical range. However, Cyndi Danner-Kuhn presents the information in an easy way which motivates me to give it a try. I went to the various resources that she suggested to get me started. I like both the http://www.weebly.com and the http://www.webs.com because they are simple and easy to understand. I’m very excited about building my own website and have decided to try the weebly website first. This session has definitely helped me overcome my fears.

7. Three Ideas:
Having my own classroom website will allow me to communicate with both my parents and students. #1: I could post my weekly Monday letter (The Grant Gazette) for parents to read. #2: I could post the dates for upcoming projects and classroom assignments. #3: I would list websites (resources) that students could go directly to in order to practice different skills like multiplication facts or grammar.

SESSION 7
Google SketchUp Unleashed
Dec. 10, 2009, Getting Started
http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=537
I created a 3D house using SketchUp. It was fun and I really enjoyed it. I know that my students will too.

4. Summary:

The Google SketchUp Unleashed session describes how to use SketchUp in your classroom. SketchUp is free software from Google that you can download from the Internet to your Mac or PC. It’s a wonderful tool for students to use to create 3D Models just like they would see in the real world.

5. Questions and Ideas for Further Exploration:
This is a great tool to use with math, engineering, architecture, and interior design.

6. Personal/Professional Development:
I like the presenter’s idea of empowering students to solve problems.

7. Three Ideas:
#1: As suggested in the video, I would let students start with four tools (orbit, rectangle, push/pull, and circle) and experiment with creating various 3D shapes. #2: In math, I would let my students create different 3D figures that we are learning about like rectangular prisms, cubes, and pyramids. #3: I would let students pick a structure of the Modern World to recreate like the Great Pyramids in Egypt.

SESSION 8

The Wizard of Apps
Dec. 7, 2009, Getting Started Keynote
http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=443
I tried to create a glog at www.edu.glogster.com, but somehow I created my glog at www.glogster.com. I'm not sure of what I did, but the first is better to use in the classroom than the latter.
I know that my students would really enjoy using this application to present project information.

There were many, many applications given in this presentation. I also went to http://newtoolsworkshop.wikispaces.com and found a ton of websites to explore. One was creating my name wih flickr (spell with flickr). How neat is that!!
