Session 1: Concept-Map Gliffy
Name of Session: Ways of Working
Conference Year and Strand: 2009, Week in the Classroom
Session URL: http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=463

Brief Summary: Ways of Working was created by an Australian educator who tries to make real-life events more meaningful to his students by using a variety of electronic tools for their research. Instead of just googling the exhibition "Sculptures by the Sea", he suggests for his students to use a variety of feeds like google news feed, google blog feed, and google twitter feed to get more of a perspective about what people are thinking and reporting about the exhibit. He also recommends flickr and the use of phones for digital story telling, and even intorduces geolocated photographs, so one can see exactly where the photos were taken. With the photos, students could create slightshows on animoto.com, use them with a voicethread, or in a comic. He also mentions creating a questionnaire on google forms, and then his students could analyze the data about the exhibition. The possibilities are almost overwhelming, but he certainly proved his point that through technology any classroom experience outside of the classroom could be endlessly enriched by using modern technology.
Questions: I wish I could ask him how much time he spends with his students to learn how to use all of these tools. Do all of his students have a computer at school readily available? At home? How much time does he spend organizing these events? Do his students use some of these tools again and again, so they really are at ease using them? What does he do with all of the inforamtion and data that his students have collected? How long does this research phase take?
Personal Gains: He certainly got me hooked on trying out some of the tools that he mentioned, and I thought that I should use some of them for this Pro D course right now. He suggested so many different tools that I have enough information for several workshops!
Application of Learning: An immediate application that comes to mind is our grade 2 fieldtrip to the Charlos Museum within an ancient civilization unit of inquiry. I think it would be great if students took some pictures during the exhibit in order to create a slide show on animoto.com. For the teachers some of the pictures could also be used for an assessment at the end of the unit. Voicethread would be a great tool to use as well. The students could comment on the various artifacts and give the audience some information. This would be a great tool to share with the parents.

Brief Summary: This session is all about becoming a "Googlio," by answering the typical questions of where, how, when, who, and what. The presenter starts by going into the details of using free Google tools that most people are not aware of as of yet. Then he claims that the pressure outside to change, to become a "digital native," is bigger nowadays than the pressure inside to stay the same. He also makes the case that it no longer is a division between the "haves" and the "have nots" anymore, as computer technology has become quite cheap these days. It is rather a matter of a willingness to change in order to achieve digital literacy. At the end he introduces his PLE systems model which includes the personal learning environment (tools, e-portfolios...), the personal learning network (people), and the personal knowledge network (places). At the top of the Bloom's digital taxonomy is "to create", and this fact needs to be considered when developing new standards for the 21st Century Education. So what is a Googlio? He comes up with his own definition which is a combination of Da Vinci and Google: "an educational renaissance, for people to collect, polish, reflect and connect digital multimedia artifacts."
Questions: My questions are all related to how we can use these new technology for evaluation and assessment, not just for the students but for the faculty as well. If we are going to assess students' know how on technology, shouldn't the teachers be evaluated on their knowledge of technology?
Personal Gains: Besides the fact that I did not know what a Googlio is, the presentation only reinforced by understanding that we need to keep up with technology in order to be able to still teach our students effectively. I loved the notion of "creation" on top of the taxonomy, as this is what we need to do: document electronically, learn from each other and collaborate electronically, and publish our work, so we can connect with other people globally.
Application of Learning: I have two immediate applications in mind. First, I will present to my faculty the notion to move to electronic portfolios for our students next year, as I would like to be able to share their work more effectively than we doing right now with our regular portfolios. Second, I will start working on my own appraisal and evaluation documentation, and start thinking about creating my own e-portfolio, and maybe eventually a webfolio.
